Every city has its secrets, and for photographers in Ho Chi Minh City, few places are as rewarding as the winding hems-those narrow alleyways where daily life unfolds in vibrant, unfiltered colour. In Thao Dien, District 2’s leafy, cosmopolitan enclave, there’s one particular hidden gem that calls to me again and again. Here, the city’s energy softens, and the details become stories waiting to be captured.
For me, this hem’s magic lies in its contrasts: the interplay of shadow and light beneath the lanterns, the juxtaposition of traditional symbols with the modern lives unfolding below. Early mornings are filled with soft, golden light filtering through the lanterns, while evenings bring a gentle buzz as the cafes fill and the street lights begin to glow.
If you find yourself in Thao Dien, wander off the main roads. Follow the lanterns and let the hems reveal their stories. Oh, and don’t forget your camera!
